India’s cement and agricultural equipment maker Kisan Group has entered the processed food business, making salty snacks in Gujarat.
The firm is manufacturing dry-food products including moong dal (mung bean), channa dal (chickpeas), and murmura (puffed rice) for Gujarat’s retail industry.
Ketan Tanna, chief marketing manager of Vadalia Foods, the business selling the products said the lines will be sold in two small pack sizes costing INR5 (US$0.08) and INR10 (US$0.16), and a bigger third pack size weighing 500 grams.
“All our products…have a shelf life of more than three months,” he said. he companies are eyeing annual sales of US$16m.
The snacks will be made at a factory in Lothada, near Rajkot, able to make 2.4m packets daily.
The company is already selling into 50,000 outlets in Gujarat, and will look to expand listings, Tanna said.
