GCMMF has increased pasteurised milk prices three times in 2009 to US$0.5 per litre, worrying consumers. However, its 2.8m milk producers are demanding more remuneration.

The co-operative’s chief general manager Rupinder Singh Sodhi told just-food the Indian government has ignored a formal GCMMF memorandum calling for a ban on exports of de-oiled cake – a rice milling byproduct used in cattle feed – and lowering of taxes on other feed ingredients.

“The cost of production is still rising and if it goes up further, naturally we have to increase the price,” he added.
