Pantaloon Retail has posted a rise in first-quarter profits on the back of sales gains.

The Indian retailer said that profit in the quarter to the end of September rose to INR4.38bn (US$93m) – up 21% on the comparable period of last year.

Sales rose to INR177bn, up from INR151bn last year.

Although the company saw an increase in costs, which rose from INR133bn to INR163bn, this was more than offset by a threefold increase in “other income”.

Pantaloon operates hypermarket chain Big Bazaar and supermarket chain Food Bazaar.
