Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has urged farmers to switch crops to ensure that the country is self sufficient in the commodities currently being imported.
Speaking at election meetings in the border towns of Pathankot and Ferozpur in Punjab, he said: “Farmers must change their farming patterns to favour products that are being imported from abroad at higher prices.”
Specifically, this means farmers should sow more pulses and oil seeds for domestic consumption, and fruits and flowers that can be exported where demand is high.
India is currently self-sufficient in wheat and rice production.
