India’s Reliance Retail is looking to UK-based supply chain specialist Wincanton to increase the efficiency of its back-end food, supermarket and hypermarket operations.
Reliance has indicated that it believes a partnership with the US$4bn supply chain solution provider will produce a number of synergies. Wincanton is expected to take over running the supply chain, finding warehousing and transportation.
While Wincanton has indicated its interest in the Indian market, it has remained tight-lipped on the Reliance deal.
“Wincanton can confirm it continues to seek development opportunities in new markets in line with its growth strategy. At this stage, Wincanton is unable to comment on any specific discussions taking place,” a spokesperson told just-food.
Reliance Retail has rapidly expanded its presence in the Indian retail sector, putting pressure on its supply chain. This, it is believed, has caused to Indian conglomerate to look for partnerships that can strengthen operations.
