Despite the attacks on some multinationals in India over the last few weeks, carried out in protest against the bombing of Afghanistan, US-based sandwich chain Subway International today reiterated its expansion plans and announced that its first Indian outlet would open in Delhi next month.

Gary D Schiff, senior regional manager (Asia Pacific) told PTI that the company foresaw no problems because “we will employ Indians”.

Schiff explained that Subway has plans to create 70 outlets in India over the next five years, with an investment of between US$100,000 and US$150,000. The company should however break even within the first three years.

Subway is hoping that its success will be guaranteed by its healthy approach, since no products are fried. The menu, which offers sandwiches, salads and freshly baked breads, has undergone some regional variation to cater for Indian tastes.

“For the first time, we will not use either beef or pork in our outlets here,” explained Schiff: “Also we will have a completely segregated vegetarian section.”
