UK retail giant Tesco has established a purchasing subsidiary in India as it looks to begin sourcing food products in the country. 

Tesco, which already sources general merchandise from Indian manufacturers, hopes the move will allow it to procure fresh and processed foods in the market.

“Tesco has been sourcing from India for over a decade and already sources nearly US$500m worth of general merchandise from suppliers in India every year. Our new Indian subsidiary will allow us to add to this by sourcing food and other goods, bringing new opportunities for suppliers in India,” a spokesperson for the company told just-food.  

The company declined to provide further details of what products it is looking to source in India.
