India’s Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), marketers of the Amul brand of dairy products, has hinted that it plans to set up production in the US.
The dairy co-operative has exported Amul products, including butter, cheese and ghee, an Asian-style butter, to the US for the last 12 years.
However, reports in India have claimed GCMMF is set to build a manufacturing plant in the US. MD R.S. Sodhi was coy about the co-operative’s plans but said: “We are in process of finalizing our plans and shall discuss at an appropriate time.”
Nonetheless, Sodhi did outline the type of products that the co-operative would look to sell in the US. “The product mix is likely to be a combination of fresh and long life products,” he said
Reports have also said GCMMF could look to build a factory in Europe in the future. Sodhi said the EU was not a current export market for the co-operative as the region had an “aversion to imports due to a domestic surplus”.
Sodhi said the co-operative, which had built a presence in the Middle East and south-east Asia, believed the business had potential further afield.
