Wal-Mart has cooled speculation that the company is planning to build a dairy processing plant in India.

The US retail giant was reported to planning to source milk directly from farmers in the north of the country and then looking at setting up a processing facility.

However, a spokesman for Wal-Mart in the US told just-food today (3 August) said the company had “made no such announcement”. He declined to comment on whether Wal-Mart had such plans for the future.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said Wal-Mart is still in talks over its planned joint venture with local conglomerate Bharti Enterprises. The talks began late last year.

“We’re moving towards completing an agreement with Bharti and we will make an announcement in due course,” the spokesman said.
