The long-awaited opening of Wal-Mart’s first store in India will take place tomorrow (30 May) in Amritsar, Punjab.
Riots in Jalandhar and other areas of Punjab following reports of an attack on Punjabi Hindu priest Sant Niranjan Dass stalled the store opening, which was originally planned for Tuesday.
“Raj Jain, MD and CEO of Bharti Wal-Mart and Rajan Bharti Mittal vice chairman and MD of Bharti Enterprises would inaugurate the Bharti Wal-Mart’s first cash-and-carry wholesale store on Saturday,” a company official told just-food.
The new cash-and-carry will carry the banner of Best Price Modern Wholesale
Thousands of small retailers fear a loss of business but Best Price will not serve retail shoppers. Instead, it will focus on retail stores, fruit and vegetable sellers, restaurants, hotels and other business outlets.
