Carrefour and its Middle East franchise partner Majid Al Furraim are looking to drive growth in the region by expanding into Iran.

“We will be opening our first hypermarket in Iran under the Carrefour banner,” a spokesperson for Majid Al Furraim told just-food this morning (27 May).

“Carrefour will be the first group to open a hypermarket in Iran and we believe that this will provide us with long-term competitive advantages. We think the format will prove very popular,” the spokesperson commented.

Majid Al Furraim operates Carrefour-branded hypermarkets along with hotels and shopping malls throughout the Middle Eastern region.

Last week, the group revealed plans to open a hotel in Iran during 2008 and suggested that it is also considering opening shopping malls in the country.
