Tesco has named PJ Clarke as chief executive of its Irish business, after current CEO Tony Keohane was appointed chairman of the unit.

A spokesperson for the company told just-food Clarke has held a “number of senior roles” since joining Tesco in 1974. He has headed up Tesco’s operations in various countries including, most recently, Japan.

“Following a succession of bigger roles in stores and retail operations in the UK, Mr Clarke was appointed International Format Director and later CEO for Tesco in the Czech and Slovak businesses in 2005.  In 2010, he was appointed CEO for Tesco’s business in the Czech Republic and in 2012 became CEO of Tesco Japan,” the spokesperson said.

Keohane has been CEO of the Irish business since 2006, having joined the Tesco Ireland board following the acquisition of the Quinnsworth business in 1997.

“He has overseen the expansion of the company to become the leading grocery and general merchandise retailer in Ireland,” the spokesperson emphasised.

The management shuffle will come into effect from 1 July. Tesco is Ireland’s largest grocer by market share. According to data from Kantar Worldpanel, Tesco’s share was 27.6% in the 12 weeks to 12 May, although that was down from 28.4% a year earlier. Discounters Aldi and Lidl are gaining share in Ireland and putting pressure on the likes of Tesco.
