Confectioners have gathered from all over the world to attend sector-specific trade show ISM in Cologne this week. Many companies are showcasing some of their most recent innovations, providing an indication of the latest trends in global confectionery markets. Here is a selection of some NPD that caught our eye.

Barry Callebaut
B2B supplier Barry Callebaut is presenting its ASM range of compound chocolates and “uniquely designed fillings”. Barry Callebaut acquired ASM Foods last year and the company said its “broad” product range complements Barry Callebaut’s existing chocolate line-up. Fillings on show include: pure Nordic berries, ‘short texture’ caramel, authentic liquorice flavours or bake-stable fruit fillings.

Intersnack Group
German confectioner Intersnack said that it hopes to attract attention with its range of “trendy snacks, contemporary innovations and a modern facelift”. The company won ISM’s innovation award with Pop Corners, a popcorn snack made by slowly popped corn shaped into crispy triangles. Other products the company said it expects to prove popular include oven-baked peanuts alongside old-favourites salted almonds and bar mix, which have seen the introduction of a new recipe. The company will be showing products in redesigned packaging that, it said, is hoped will lead to a “greater differentiation” between the different varieties of nut snack.

Beneo Inc
Beneo, a functional ingredients manufacturer, is using ISM 2014 to showcase “tooth-friendly children’s confectionery”, made possible through its trademarked ingredient Palatinose. Beneo’s functional carbohydrate has facilitated the development of “healthier confectionery products” such as the first polyol-free, tooth-friendly bubble gum with “a sugar-like taste and sweetness”, the company said.

Jelly Belly Candy Company
Iconic US sweet manufacturer Jelly Belly Candy Company unveiled a new line of gifts for a variety of special occasions at this year’s ISM. The company is launching a range of Disney character jelly beans. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck and Goofy are featured on two new special edition gift bags of Jelly Belly jelly beans, the company said. Meanwhile, the group hopes to build on the success of its Harry Potter line in the US by expanding distribution to global markets. In a slightly more unusual development, the company revealed that it has also developed a beer flavoured jelly bean.

PEZ International
PEZ International are unveiling a host of new dispensers. The iconic dispensers on show this year include: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Planes (I and II), Rio, The Smurfs, Mini Mouse and Jake and the Netherland Pirates. The Austrian company is also targetting adults with retro dispensers for its new peppermint sugarfree candies.
