G Willi-Food International has said that it is ready to defend two purported class action lawsuits that have been separately filed against the company.

The individual complaints allege that the company, one of Israel’s largest food importers as a supplier of kosher food products, misled its customers by reducing the contents of cans of several types of preserved products, without changing the price.
The complaints, if recognised as a class action, allege damages of approximately NIS7.7m (US$1.8m), in the case of one claim, and approximately NIS6.2m in the case of the second claim. Half of the alleged damages of each claim would be for return of the overcharge and one half for additional compensation.
The company believes that the complaints are without merits and intends to vigorously defend against the litigations, it said.
On 11 December 2006, the company said that a purported class action lawsuit had been filed alleging that the company misled its customers by reducing the content in its tuna containers whilst charging the same price. That complaint, if recognised as a class action, alleged damages of approximately NIS23.5m (US$5.6m), the company said at the time.
