Israel’s Ministry of Agriculture and private entrepreneurs will establish in Romania demonstration farms and agro-industrial centres, aimed at modernising Romania’s agricultural production infrastructure and developing a modern food processing industry.
An agreement to this effect was reached between Romania’s Minister of Agriculture Ilie Sarbu and Israel’s Minister of Agriculture Shalom Simhon, during the latter’s visit in Romania at the end of August.
Minister Simhon said that a joint committee headed by the directors general of both ministries and comprising experts from both countries will select the sites throughout Romania in which the demonstration farms will be established. Israeli companies specialising in irrigation, crop and post harvest treatment and management, agro-technology, storage, packaging and marketing will set up commercial centres for introducing advanced agricultural technologies.
Simhon said that special emphasis will be directed to establish organic agriculture in Romania, and to develop Romania’s dairy and poultry farms.
“Agriculture in Romania has great potential for rapid growth and development. Romania is endowed with fertile land, clean soil and plenty of water, but lacking modern and efficient infrastructure. Romania has now asked Israel to suggest ways and means to modernise Romania’s agricultural infrastructure,” Simhon commented.
