The export of Israel’s Sweetie citrus variety to Japan and South Korea, the major markets for this fruit, will be centralised as of this season.

The decision reached by the Citrus Marketing Board and the export companies aims to avoid the competition among the Israeli exporters on these markets, and to save “considerable operating costs involved in shipping and marketing,” according to Mena Davidson, CMBI general manager.

Israel’s export of the Sweetie variety to Japan and South Korea comprises 70% of the total volume of export of this brand to overseas market. According to CMBI, the forecast for the 2002/03 season is exporting 700,000 cases of Sweetie to Japan and South Korea, the same volume as in the previous season.

Davidson added that the centralised export to Japan and South Korea is based on the model of the centralised, single-hand export and marketing of Israel grapefruits in Italy, as has been practiced successfully in the past ten years, following a voluntary agreement among the exporters)
