Italian farm minister Giovanni Alemanno is forming plans to create an independent food safety agency in September, according to the ministry’s website.

The Italian agency will be designed to work with the future European Food Authority, although it is not known yet where either agency will be based.

Alemanno commented: “I have proposed setting up an Italian food safety agency to work with the European authority of the same name, which we hope will be based in Parma, in order to guarantee in our country maximum protection of consumers.”
