The Italian health ministry has reported the first suspected case of the human form of mad cow disease.
Just over a year ago, Italy confirmed its first home-bred instance of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), and has since identified 53 cases. The news that the disease may have spread to the human population in the form of variant Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (vCJD) is devastating.
VCJD was linked to BSE in the late 1990s, and has killed 100 people in Europe, primarily in the UK.
