Germany-based retailer Rewe has said southern Italy will be the “focal point” for the expansion of the company’s Penny discount chain in the country in 2009.

Rewe opened its first Penny store in the south of Italy in December in the city of Cantazaro.

The company now has 31 Penny stores in the south of Italy, including three stores in Sicily.

A Rewe spokesperson told just-food: “In the future, the south will be a focal point of our expansion in Italy because we see attractive potential for new discount stores. We plan to open more new Penny stores in the south in 2009.”

The spokesperson declined to comment on the number of Penny stores Rewe plans to open.
