Posting its first sales gain at its supermarket division in 11-years, Japanese retailer Aeon said today (4 April) that its group net profits for the fiscal ended 20 February doubled.
Aeon reported a group net profit of JPY57.66bn, up 99% from it’s year-ago profit of JPY28.93bn. Revenue rose 8.9% to JPY4.83trn, while operating profit was up 14% to JPY189.73bn.
Aeon’s supermarket unit posted a comparatively strong performance despite tough market conditions, with remodelling efforts lifting same-store sales by 0.2%. According to the Japan Chain Stores Association, national supermarket sales fell 1.6% year-on-year in February – the 14th straight month of decline.
For the coming fiscal year, Aeon forecast group net profits of JPY70-76bn, operating profit of JPY200-210bn and revenue exceeding JPY5.250trn.
