Japanese authorities have put a stop on the sale of food products containing US long-grain rice in the country. The move comes after a genetically modified strain not approved for human consumption was detected in US commercial supplies.
The genetically engineered rice was detected by a German company Bayer CropScience AG, which then notified US officials.
“The health ministry ordered local governments to track down with food manufacturers to check whether imported products are made with US long grains,” a health ministry official said.
US Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns said there was no risk to humans.
Japan has not imported long-grain rice in raw form from the US since March 1998, according to the Japanese farm and health ministries.
