A highly contagious strain of avian influenza has hit southern Japan, killing thousands of chickens.

A local agricultural official said that around 6,000 chickens are so far thought to have died from the disease at a poultry farm in the Yamaguchi Prefecture, around 800km southwest of Tokyo, reported Dow Jones International News.

Officials said it was the first recorded case of bird flu in Japan for around 79 years.

Eggs from the farm in Yamaguchi have been recalled, and the remaining 28,600 birds on the farm are to be destroyed to prevent the spread of the disease.
