Japanese snacks group Calbee has booked an increase in first-quarter profits boosted by higher sales and cost cuts.

In the three months to the end of June, net profit amounted to JPY2.07bn (US$25.7m) compared to JPY566m in the prior-year period. Operating profit soared to JPY3.78bn from JPY1.38bn a year earlier.

Net sales climbed 21.1% to JPY43.29bn. Snack food sales in the period increased 20.9% to JPY36.8m, driven by an increase in promotional activities in the quarter.
