Japan-based convenience store operator FamilyMart plans to increase its number of outlets worldwide to 25,000 by the 2015 fiscal year, from its current 16,000 stores.

The biggest increase will be in China, where it will boost its stores from 360 to 4,500, FamilyMart president Junji Ueda revealed. Store openings will be centred on Shanghai, where the port-city has the infrastructure and distribution facilities to support the expansion.

In South Korea, the company plans to open 2,000 new stores, taking its total to 7,000, while increasing its outlets in Taiwan from around 2,400 to about 3,000.

Store numbers in Thailand are expected to grow by 560 to about 1,000 – although FamilyMart temporarily closed one of its outlets in Bangkok over the weekend, due to the unrest in the city.

At home, FamilyMart plans to increase its numbers to about 9,700 stores, up from 7,700 – despite the challenging retail environment in Japan.
