Japan’s Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry is planning to revise the country’s law and introduce the threat of jail sentences for those who mislabel food products.

After a spate of high-profile mislabelling scams, involving companies such as Snow Brand Foods, the government said a law change could also mean that perpetrators will soon be named and shamed. Currently, the JAS law means that companies must give their consent for their names to be released to the public.
The proposed jail terms would be for a maximum of one year, and the maximum fines for the scam would be increased from ¥500,000 to ¥1m (US$7,600) for individuals, and ¥100m for companies.
