Japanese confectionery and baked goods group Fujiya Co. has resumed sales through its directly owned and franchised outlets, following a suspension of production and sales in mid-January after out-of-date ingredients were found to have been used in its cream puffs and cakes.

”We are very happy to start anew,” said Fujiya’s president Yasufumi Sakurai. ”Even though regaining public trust should be a major challenge, everyone of us at Fujiya will work hard on it.”

Some 64 lines, including cakes and some ice cream products, have been re-introduced and 221 out of the 800 stores nationwide have been re-opened. The company explained that the resumption had been restricted to a limited number of stores because many outlets could not obtain enough part-time staff to re-open, and because the full product range is not yet available after the suspension, which had lasted 50 days.

Fujiya was reported to be planning to have all its outlets, excluding 61 that will be shut permanently, trading again by early-April.
