A spokesman for Kanagawa prefecture explained that tissue from the cow has now been sent to a national institute for a second round of tests. Results from these tests are due to be released in the next day or two, and if they confirm the presence of BSE, the cow will be the fifth case in Japan since the disease was first discovered about last autumn.

Meanwhile, Poland’s State Veterinary Institute has confirmed the infection of a second Polish cow with BSE. Test samples will be sent to a foreign laboratory for a second opinion, but the last test appears conclusive. The 13-year old cow from a small farm near Lublin has been slaughtered.
