Japanese convenience retailer Lawson has booked an increase in third-quarter profit, despite “challenging” trading conditions at home and in its international markets.

In the three months to the end of November, net profit climbed 38.5% to JPY7.93bn (US$56.59bn). In the comparable period last year, the retailer incurred losses stemming from the Great East Japan earthquake.

Operating profit amounted to JPY53.49bn, a 7.5% increase on last year, while net sales were up 3.2% to JPY372.27bn.

The retailer said it opened 604 stores in the period from 1 March to 30 November.
