Nestle Japan has added more distinct local flavours to its Kit Kat range, including regional speciality varieties that are exclusive to certain regions of Japan.
The ‘matcha’ green tea flavour – ostensibly from the ancient capital of Kyoto – has been popular for years, and Nestlé has recently added new varieties such as ‘yuzu’ – a citrus fruit, soy sauce – from Tokyo, and melons – from the northern island of Hokkaido.
“There are now 19 varieties, and including all the discontinued lines, there have been about double that number in total,” said a spokesperson from Nestlé Japan’s Kobe head office.
“You can only get some of these types by travelling to the region where they’re sold, so that makes them attractive as small gifts for people,” explained the spokesperson.
Nestlé is also introducing some of the flavours in its ‘edible-postcard’ Kit Kat range, with special packaging that can be posted as a gift, with space on the box for a message.
