Nippon Meat Packers has denied allegations that it has been caught up in a new labelling fraud.
The Japanese meat packer has been accused of altering the date labels on chilled Chinese food products in order to sell the products longer. The claim was reported on Tokyo Broadcasting Systems last night [Thursday]. The report says that the mislabelling occurred at Nippon’s Kansai food plant in western Japan, from around April last year. It would have extended the quality guarantee period by one or two days.
However, Nippon hotly contests the report. “There is no truth to it at all,” a spokeswoman said.
The allegations come just as the company is trying to get back on its feet following the high profile mislabelling of foreign beef as domestic in an attempt to secure government subsidies. High-level managers have been demoted in a bid to restore consumer confidence.
