Japan’s leading pickles maker Pickles Corp. is to invest around Japanese yen JPY200 million (US$2.2m) to develop its private-label products for retailers.
“Our products [including pickled cabbage and pickled cucumber] will be sold in convenience stores and supermarkets,” a spokesman told just-food.
The move follows a letter to investors in May by Pickles’ CEO Yoshiro Ogino, where he revealed long-term plans to grow the company’s market share to 10% of the Japanese picked vegetable market through developing its PB business.
In March, Pickles completed a new plant in Japan’s Kansai region to expand private-label production.
Ogino expects sales of private-label products would reach JPY19.6bn (US$214m) in February 2011, a 7% growth year-on-year.
Pickles’ current orders are mainly from Seven & I Holdings, one of the largest retailers in Japan.
