Japan’s Ito-Yokado, the supermarket arm of Seven & I Holdings, is to further cut jobs at its Tokyo group headquarters and redeploy about 12% of its staff to retail outlets.
The head office workforce had already been reduced from around 1,000 to the current 820 by the end of February 2008 but the continuing downturn in consumer spending has forced further reductions.
“The harsh business conditions are the reason for these actions,” a spokesperson at Seven & I Holdings told just-food.
However, contrary to reports in local media, the company insists there will be no redundancies amongst staff.
“The staff from the head office won’t be laid off, but transferred to positions on the retail side,” said the spokesperson.
