Same-store sales at Japanese supermarkets fell by 5% year-on-year in December, hitting a 21-year low, local retail figures revealed today (23 January).

Data from the Japanese Chain Store Association said December sales fell to JPY1.25trn (US$13.8bn).

Demand has been dampened in Japan as consumers reduce spending in the face of falling wages and rising unemployment.

Including sales from newly-opened stores, revenue dipped by 4.2% during the month.

December’s decline marks the 13th consecutive drop in supermarket sales.
