JBS buys plant in US for beef products

Brazilian meat group JBS, one of the largest in the sector worldwide, has acquired another processing facility in the US.

By Dean Best

Brazilian meat processor JBS has acquired a facility in the US state of Colorado previously occupied by fellow protein business Mountain States Rosen.

JBS said family-owned meat firm Mountain States filed for bankruptcy in April and liquidated its assets, including the lamb processing plant the Brazilian business is acquiring in the city of Greeley through an auction process.

“The acquisition presents an exciting opportunity to provide value-added and premium, retail-ready beef products to consumers in Colorado and across the United States,” JBS said.

It continued: “We successfully bid for the facility during a bankruptcy auction on 16 July and anticipate closing in the coming days. While we acquired the facility and certain assets, we did not acquire the business. During this process, we proactively worked with Mountain States Rosen to ensure there would be no disruption to US lamb producers as operations were discontinued.”

JBS added it will invest in the plant to convert the facility for processing beef products. All Mountain States employees at the Greeley factory have been given the opportunity to apply for jobs with JBS, although it is not the company’s intention to otherwise initiate any lay-offs.

just-food has asked JBS for further details on the planned investment and when the plant will be operational.
