Brazilian meat giant JBS has advanced by five years the date by which it wants to see zero deforestation by its suppliers in a number of domestic regions.

JBS now wants to end deforestation in the supply chain by 2025 in the Cerrado, Pantanal, Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes, matching a previously-announced commitment for the Amazon. The previous commitment in those regions was for a 2030 end date.

In a statement, JBS said the use of its “transparent livestock farming platform” has enabled the date to be brought forward. Using blockchain technology, JBS said it will be able to enforce sustainability criteria when analysing the suppliers of its own suppliers in every biome where it operates.

JBS said that, in addition to expanding the monitoring system and tracking the supply chain, it is assisting producers to improve the environmental performance of their properties through a network of ‘green offices’ located at its processing units in various regions of the country.

It said 13 offices have already opened to provide guidance to producers who adhere to the platform.

“With this technical support, properties that are currently blocked, for example, will be able to become suppliers again after they address environmental liabilities and comply with the law,” it said.

It added that all livestock suppliers to JBS will adhere to the transparency platform by the end of 2025 and that, commencing January 2026, adherence to the platform will become a mandatory condition for negotiating the sale of cattle to the company.

JBS said these measures are aligned with its Net Zero 2040 commitment announced in March.

In September, JBS announced the launch of a fund to help tackle deforestation in the Amazon region.
