Fachner, who has worked for J&J and its beverages subsidiary, The ICEE Company, since 1979, succeeds company founder Gerald Shreiber as CEO. Shreiber is to continue in his other post as chairman.
“Dan’s leadership and loyalty has been at the core of the J&J Snack Foods story, and I know he will skillfully serve our organisation and pursue its continued success,” Shreiber said.
J&J acquired The ICEE Company, a semi-frozen carbonated beverage manufacturer, in 1987. Fachner started working for The ICEE Company in 1979, according to his LinkedIn profile. He was named senior vice-president of The ICEE Company in 1994 and became president of the unit in 1997.
Fachner said: “It is a great privilege to lead this remarkable company, which Gerry built brick by brick from its humble foundation.”
In the six months ended 27 March, J&J’s sales were $497.2m, down 10% on a year earlier. Operating income dropped 76% to $7.8m. The company’s net earnings decreased 68% to $7.8m.
The decline in sales J&J saw in its second quarter was less steep than in the opening three months of its fiscal year as foodservice venues started to open. Second-quarter sales were down 6%, versus 15% in the first quarter.
Announcing the half-year results last month, Fachner said: “I am starting to see some momentum in our business as key venues like theatres, amusement parks, sports arenas and schools start to open and increase capacity. Consumers are starting to get out of their homes with more confidence and enjoying experiences they have missed over the last year. Our products are well-positioned for these encouraging trends, and we are excited about the opportunities ahead of us.”
