Construction work on a new Maxima hypermarket in the Latvian capital of Riga has been suspended by city authorities after local residents complained.

Building had already started on the store, which was due to be completed in autumn, but local residents in Plavnieki, a residential Riga suburb, were upset because trees were being knocked down, said Riga City Council spokeswoman Velta Purina. Purina added that the council would now investigate a solution, which could involve landscaping the area around the store.
Officials from Vilniaus Prekyba, Lithuania’s largest retailer and the parent company of Maxima, are certain that the move indicates that the company is being singled out for persecution.
Company spokesman Kestutis Liutkus told the Baltic Times: “No other stores have these kinds of problems.”
