Lifeway Foods, the US producer of cultured dairy products, has started production of kefir at a plant in Waukesha it acquired from Golden Guernsey in 2013.
The company has been processing raw milk and producing its own bottles at the plant for more than a year, following renovations at the plant.

Lifeway said it plans to "capitalise" on global demand for probiotics with their 170,000-square-foot plant, which it said will more than quintuple the combined manufacturing capacity of the group's three existing facilities.
The Waukesha plant employs over 40 people. Lifeway purchased the plant for US$7.4 million in May 2013.
"We acquired the Golden Guernsey plant because we urgently needed more production capacity," Lifeway president and CEO Julie Smolyanksy said. "Renovating the building to meet our specific manufacturing and packaging needs has been a top priority, and the start of kefir production in Waukesha is an important milestone that will help drive the next chapter in the company's growth."
Earlier this year, Lifeway announced it was making its kefir drinks available to customers in Mexico.
