Wal-Mart has remained quiet on rumours that it is one of the frontrunners in the race to acquire cash and carry chain Makro’s Malaysian stores. Were the deal to go through it would mark the entry of the world’s largest retailer into the Malaysian market.


“We cannot comment on rumour and speculation of this kind,” a representative for the company told just-food. The company did confirm that it is constantly considering expansion opportunities and evaluating the potential of new markets.


Bids for Makro’s eight Malaysian outlets are due by the end of the month. It has been reported in the local press that the sale has attracted considerable interest from the likes of Tesco, Metro and Costco.
