Meiji Holdings, the Japanese food group, has announced plans to expand its local production of yoghurt drinks.

The company is extending production of its Meiji Purobio Yogurt at two plants in Japan.

A line will be added at a factory in Aichi. The JPY2.7bn (US$22.4m) investment will see production start next month. Two lines will also be added at Meiji's site in Kyoto at a cost of JPY5.2bn. The first line will be up and running next month, with the second operational from December.

Meiji is expanding the parts of its business that contribute to what it calls "a healthy diet" as part of a two-year strategic plan announced in April. The group wants to grow its annual sales from probiotics and yoghurt from JPY165.4bn in the year ended March 2015 to at least JPY180bn in the financial year that ends March 2018.
