US confectionery giant Mondelez International is reportedly mulling the closure of a biscuit plant in Portugal.

According to ESM, the firm told workers it is planning to close the Mem Martins plant and move production to the Opava factory in the Czech Republic.

The move, pencilled for the third quarter of 2016, will result in 100 job losses. The factory produces the Triunfo and Proalimentar brands.

Mondelez was unavailable for comment at time of press. A statement to ESM said the factory had not "achieved adequate efficiency levels" despite an investment of EUR4m since 2012. The factory is only operating at 35% of its capacity, the statement said 

The news follows reports last week that Mondelez is considering the sale of its French confectionery unit.

According to French business publication Challenges, the multinational has put up for sale a business unit that includes the Carambar and Krema brands.
