Sodiaal-owned French dairy brand Candia has expanded its activities in North Africa, signing a franchise agreement in Morocco with Marrakech-based dairy Best Milk.

Best Milk, which is controlled by a group of Moroccan investors, has modern dairy facilities in the region.

“Best Milk acquired a dairy in Marrakech formerly run by the Cooperative Le Bon Lait. The plant has undergone a complete renovation in order to bring it into line with the latest production norms,” a senior Candia official told just-food.

However, he declined to disclose the investment costs incurred by Best Milk in the renovation work.

“Summer 2008 will mark the launch of the Candia brand in Morocco with the Marrakech plant producing fresh pasteurised milk and milk-based drinks. UHT milk production at the plant will only take place in a second phase of development,” the official added.

The plant will process up to 70m litres of milk annually and allow coverage of the whole of Morrocco.

“The franchise deal with Best Milk completes our expansion in the Maghreb region following the franchise agreements we signed last year, for UHT milk production in Tunisia and Libya,” the official said.

Candia also has a strong position in the Algerian dairy market where it has been present for the past seven-to-eight years.
