Nestlé has teamed up with supplier Corbion to work on expanding the packaged-food giant’s use of microalgae-based ingredients.

The world’s largest food maker uses algae already, including Purina DentaLife dog treats in the US and in a supplement sold under the Garden of Life brand.

However, the Garden Gourmet owner is looking at using applications for plant-based food, saying the microalgae ingredients are “a vegan source of protein, healthy lipids and various micronutrients”. Nestlé also said “the production of microalgae has a low carbon, land and water footprint”.

Stefan Palzer, Nestlé’s chief technology officer, said: “We are actively exploring the use of microalgae as an alternative protein and micronutrient source for exciting plant-based products. Through the partnership with Corbion, we will be able to use great-tasting, nutritious microalgae-based ingredients to innovate across our different product categories.”

Asked when Nestlé expected to launch products through the partnership with Corbion, a spokesperson told just-food: “The partnership is just beginning, so we don’t want to speculate on where it might take us or when products will come to market.”
