Discount supermarket chain Jumbo generated sales of EUR€811m (US$964.9m) in 2005, the Dutch News Digest has reported.

This figure has increased by 12.5% on the previous year, the company announced.

This growth was primarily attributed to the opening of new supermarkets, as the number of outlets increased by 10 to 76 stores.

According to GFK market research company, the revenue growth of the whole supermarket sector in 2005 was just over 0%.

Jumbo intends to continue this prolific expansion and plans to open 10 to 15 new supermarkets in 2006.
