Dutch retailer Laurus could register a new name in an attempt to emerge from an unsettled period defined by disposals.
Laurus spokeswoman Dieuwertje Beerepoot told just-food: “The operative word here is ‘considering’. We are thinking about it but nothing is decided yet.”
Laurus sold off its Edah and Konmar supermarkets last year, leaving the Super de Boer chain as its sole operation. Beerepoot said that, “logically”, Super de Boer would be considered an option as Laurus’ replacement name.
She continued: “The [Laurus] name is affected by what we have been through in the past few years and brings a negative image.”
In January this year, Laurus posted sales totalling EUR3.21bn (US$4.24bn) for fiscal 2006, down from EUR3.69bn in 2005, reflecting its disposals. However, the company appointed a new CEO in October last year, and has indicated that Super de Boer would break even in 2007, thanks to its restructuring plan to see a return to profitability.
