Young’s the UK seafood giant, has “tapped into the growing snacking and sharing trend” with the launch of Pocorn Scampi Bites.

The company said it has been inspired by a ‘popcorn’ serving style to “resonate with a younger family audience”.

The bites are wrapped in “crispy, golden breadcrumbs”, and come in a 300g pack size. 

Yvonne Adam, marketing director of Young’s, said: “We’re seeing growth in snacking and sharing formats across the category, particularly amongst a younger, family audience. Our Popcorn Scampi Bites introduces a new format that is perfect for flexible eating occasions – snacking, sharing and family together time.”

Young’s Popcorn Scampi Bites will be available in Asda from 2 July with an RRP of GBP2.50 (US$3.17). 

Danone launches Activia smoothies in the US

French dairy heavyweight Danone has added to its probiotic range in the US with the launch of smoothies under its Activia brand.

Activia Probiotic Smoothies are being launched in three flavours and are a blend of billions of live and active probiotics with fruit, vegetables and seeds, including ingredients such as chia, hemp seeds, beets, carrots and ginger and fruits such as mango, strawberry and pomegranate.

The low fat yogurt drink is made with zero grams of added sugar with the only sugar coming from the fruit, vegetables and milk. They contain no artificial flavours, preservatives or colours from artificial sources.

Danone said: “Activia Probiotic Smoothies makes it easy to support gut health as part of a balanced diet and daily routine.”

Activia Probiotic Smoothies are available at retailers nationwide for a RRP of US$1.99.

Conagra Brands unveils Birds Eye vegetable swap meal range

US food company Conagra Brands has launched a series of better-for-you vegetable takes on “family favourite” meals via its frozen brand Birds Eye.

The meals substitute pasta and rice for pasta made from zucchini (courgette) and lentil, as well as riced cauliflower. 

Conagra said these frozen dishes, including Chicken Alfredo Pasta, Three Cheese Ziti, Cheddar Mac & Cheese and Cheesy Chicken & Broccoli, aim to fit a low carb lifestyle and increase vegetable servings, “all without sacrificing the flavour of popular meals families know and love”.

Anne Murphy, senior brand manager for Birds Eye, said: “These new Birds Eye meals deliver popular family favourite dishes in under 15 minutes, while also making it easy and enjoyable for families to eat more vegetables by swapping in pasta made from vegetables and riced cauliflower rather than traditional carbs.”

The range is widely available for a RRP of US$6.99 to $7.99.

Sea Chips’ salmon skin snacks to be sold in Sainsbury’s

UK snack maker Sea Chips has won a listing with ‘big four’ supermarket Sainsbury’s for its salmon skin crisps.

The snacks – also called Sea Chips – will be sold as part of the retailers’ ‘Taste of the Future’ scheme, whereby it trials innovative snacks. They will be available in stores in the south of England from this month.

Sea Chips creators Dan Pawson and Dom Smith developed the product when they discovered that over half of all seafood caught in the UK is wasted. 

Pawson said: “Launching with Sainsbury’s as part of their ‘Taste of the Future’ scheme is a huge milestone for Sea Chips and we’re delighted to have been selected as one the brands to kick of this innovative trial – it is a true testament of our success to date.”

The snacks are made with only natural ingredients and are gluten-free and contain 12.5g of protein per 20g pack. They are available in Lightly Salted, Lime & Chilli and Salt & Vinegar variants with a RRP of GBP1.50 (US$1.91).
