Apple growers have expressed frustration at ENZA’s proposed levy aimed at clearing the its NZ$50m debt.
ENZA is set to lose its marketing monopoly this year, however first it has revealed that it will impose a compulsory levy of NZ$4.5 a carton on growers to clear debts racked up by the old Apple and Pear Marketing board. Nigel Cooper, an apple grower from Hastings, branded the charge unfair because many current growers were not actually supplying the board when the debt was incurred.
Cooper said that the only way he can pay the charge is by selling part of his land, and added that many other growers will be similarly hurt.
