Weedons Poultry Farm has been found guilty of deception after passing of eggs as free range. Christchurch District Court fined Weedons NZ$35,000 for passing off, over a 12 month period from August 1999, 22,000 eggs as free range, even though they had been laid by hens in cages. This meant the eggs could be sold for NZ$3.50 a dozen rather than the NZ$1.75 price of normal eggs. The eggs were sold in Christchurch supermarkets under the
