A group made up of some of Norway’s largest food retailers has called on the Ministry of Agriculture and Food to help increase the amount of organic food being produced in the country.

ICA, NorgesGruppen, Rema 1000 and the Coop have joined forces in the call for increased domestic production of organic foods, a spokesperson for ICA confirmed to just-food.
“The four largest retailers want to see a growth in production of organic foods in the country. At the moment, organic production is not meeting demand,” the spokesperson said.
Organic food sales are expected to rise by 25% in the coming years; however, according to a report from Norsk Institutt for Landbruks Okonomisk Forskning (NILF) published in August, the number of organic farmers is decreasing.
“The rate of exit by farmers from the organic sector is continuing to grow. The primary reasons cited by farmers are excessive bureaucracy, difficulties in registering organic products, and the general amount of paperwork involved,” the report said.
