German retailer Aldi is understood to be eyeing an expansion into New Zealand in a bid to build upon its growth in Australia.
The privately-owned discount giant has already registered its website at www.aldi.co.nz and is said to have registered over 100 trademarks with the country’s Intellectual Property Office, according to reports in New Zealand.
Aldi currently operates around 200 outlets in Australia already.
However, a spokesperson for the retailer declined to confirm the reports: “We are focused on our operations along the east coast of Australia for now. This includes Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.”
A move into New Zealand would give Kiwi shoppers a third choice for their groceries in a market dominated by Progressive and Foodstuffs.
